The United Conservative Party will be the majority party for the next four years in Alberta. Lead by Danielle Smith, the UCP hold a 49 seat majority to the New Democrat Party's 38.

The UCP promised to not raise taxes on businesses and to invest more in tourism, as a couple of policies directly related to Alberta's craft industry.

ASBA, ACDA and our partners will continue to advocate for changes to the markup schedules for each segment of liquor manufacturing, access to Connect Logistics, equitable application of building and safety codes, and the proper implementation of side-streaming to mitigate extra fees on wastewater.

    • Start by reviewing the online Bylaw Guide or Bylaw Guide Videos to learn more about the bylaw, its benefits, and steps you should take to prepare (or review the full bylaw here)

    • Review the Sustainable Food Service Guide for help choosing more environmentally-friendly alternatives to Styrofoam, and find a local supplier

    • Print posters and tent cards to help inform your customers about bylaw requirements

Bylaw requirements as of July 1, 2023

    • Single-use plastic shopping bags can no longer be distributed

      • Businesses must charge at least 15 cents for paper shopping bags (increasing to 25 cents on July 1, 2024)

      • Businesses must charge at least $1 for new reusable shopping bags (increasing to $2 on July 1, 2024)

    • Styrofoam cups, plates, bowls, containers, etc. can no longer be used

    • Businesses may only provide accessories (like straws, condiment packets, cutlery and napkins) if a customer requests them

      • Accessories can also be provided at a self-serve station
